California's early warning system, many told 5.2 earthquake
The size of the Monday 5.2 Temblor was another success of the early warning system in California, where users in some areas said they had received alerts on their phones before they felt shaking.
In some cases, alerts made axial seconds of bullets-and heads can be decisive in the event of a large earthquake.
“It was great! A great early warning !!!” One of the residents told the social media account of the USGs on X. [shaking] Hit the wave. I did well!”
Temblor was concentrated near Julian in San Diego County.
Since the shaking from the earthquake transmits the sound of sound through the rocks, slower than the speed of modern communication systems, the alerts in some parts of Los Angeles appear before the shaking reaches the city. No significant damage or injuries were reported.
The early earthquake appears on the phone after an earthquake in August 2024.
(Robert de Groot / US Geological) Survey)
The American Geological Geological Survey runs the Shakealert Earthquake – which works in California, Oregon and Washington. The system relies on a wide range of seismic sensors to detect shaking as soon as it occurs. Then this information is sent to computers to determine whether it is and where to send an alert.
People in Camarilo, Manhattan Beach, Palm Springs, Riverburid, said in the San Diego neighborhood of Rancho Pinscotos, Santa Anna, south of Orange County, said they got an early earthquake before the start of shaking, according to social media communication and interviews with local newspaper ports.
“Corona Del Mar here. I got the alert about 5-10 seconds before a large service.”
Another user added: “I got the alert for one second before I feel it! I'm in Palm Springs! I'm very impressed.”
Another wrote: “He did this Shake Abert! He had a phone at hand … and I had 5 seconds to respond.”
Geologists also received at the California Geological Survey in Los Angeles early warning notifications on their phones, “So we were ready for some shaking,” one of the scientists published on social media.
One of the fastest ways that people can get an early earthquake is my Myshake, a free application developed by UC Berkeley, which provides alerts in partnership with USGs and the California Ruler's Emergency Services Office. The application can be downloaded on Android devices as well as on iPhone, iPads and Mac Computer.
Android phones also have an early warning app.
More than half a million people in California received early warnings through myshake on December 5 for an earthquake, which was hit 30 miles off the coast of Humboldt County; On December 9, an earthquake of 5.7 is concentrated about 50 miles southeast of Renault, which was widely felt throughout California.
Saint Diego Province also provides SD free emergency app, which includes the Shakereadysd Earmake's warning tool.
Some Angelinus who received the alert said that it raised what is usually somewhat normal – especially for residents for a long time. A person posted on X that she was “afraid, frankly, after getting Drop directions. Cover. She holds “from alert, although she lived dozens of other earthquakes.
This feeling, however, can reduce that people are accustomed to alerts. For some, it is useful to know that the shake they feel is actually an earthquake, so that they can take preventive measures such as dropping the office, cover and stick.
Early warnings of the earthquake is now common in seismic areas around the world, including in Japan, Mexico and Taiwan.
Android phones and those who have myshake or Shakeradeysd apps are at the lowest threshold of the early earthquake. It is appointed to operating alerts if an earthquake is estimated at 4.5 or higher, and the severity of the shaking on the phone site is expected to be “weak” – which is defined as a level 3 on the modified Mercalli scale.
The vibration of this density will be noticeable for people inside, especially on the upper floors of the building, and may cause a little rock. Some people inside may look like a feeling of vibrations from a passing truck.
People who do not have smartphones can still be installed or early warning applications are installed to receive alerts on their mobile phones – but only when a higher level or a greater level of shaking is displayed in its location. These alerts are sent through the wireless emergency alert system, similar to amber.
However, one of the negative aspects of relying on wireless emergency alerts is that it provides less information than an alert created by applications.
There is a setting that you can change on the iPhone to improve speed, accuracy and reliability of emergency alerts, says Apple. To do this, you can run “local consciousness” by going to the settings, then notifications; Passing down to “government alerts”, then clicking on “emergency alerts” and moving to the option.
On its website, myshake suggests opening the application every month or so to keep it “new and ready to receive alerts. Not using the application for a long time may cause the application to be put in deep sleep.”
Myshake suggests that one of the easy ways to do this is to click on the application when he teaches you – without any urgent and disturbing warning sounds – a big earthquake around the world, which usually happens every two weeks. “By clicking on this notice, opening my Myshake application, you can keep the application new, and don't have to rely on your own reminder.”
Myshake is now available in six languages: English, Spanish, Hill, Korean, Vietnamese and Chinese – the last of which has been expressed in mandarin, and the use of traditional characters. Myshake will use the first language you support from your device's language settings and region settings, but on the iPhone, you can change the language by moving to the settings, then applications and selecting myshake before choosing a favorite language.
