Researchers are re-interviewing Cantabrian residents about their experiences of an earthquake in a study, the first of its kind in the world, looking at how people talk about a disaster and deal with it in the following years.

It has been nearly 10 years since the first Christchurch earthquake and for many, the earthquake journey is still on.

She has hired a lawyer, after failing to repair her family’s home three times.

She told 1NEWS: “It’s a horrible story, we’re still fighting with EQDC and now the insurance companies.”

In 2012, 750 people shared their stories with University of Canterbury researchers in a pop-up earthquake studio.

Moore had never imagined that in 2020 she would still talk about the earthquake and its repercussions.

“To us, it doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of change – everyone has let us down,” she said.

The researchers never intended to re-interview participants, but thanks to a Marsden Fund grant, they are conducting the world’s first research.

“Nobody has ever studied longitudinal studies of people’s narratives after disasters,” said project lead Professor Paul Millar.

These latest interviews reveal the second wave of shock that no one could anticipate.

“In the second round we definitely found a lot of focus on insurance, EQC, and what happened to their home, so people are still living in broken homes and they’re stuck there,” said assistant researcher Sam Hope.

Millar says rebuilding is happening more slowly than many people expected.

The challenge now is to track down those who participated in 2012 so they can share the second part of the earthquake story.

In another seven years’ time, it is hoped that the third installment will be shared, creating a digital archive for future generations.

“I don’t think the disaster is over until the life of the last person returns to be as close to normal as possible,” Millar said.
