Residents of Sparta recorded 525 reports of damage in the aftermath of the North Carolina earthquake, Ghani county officials and mayor say.

Sparta, North Carolina (WTVD) – Ghanaian County and Sparta officials have requested state and federal assistance as they continue to assess and clean up damage from the 5.1-magnitude earthquake earlier this month.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Ghanaian County Emergency Management Coordinator Daniel Rotten said the county had received 525 reports of damage – some of which were very slight, but 60 of them were rated as “significant,” which means buildings have lost at least 40 percent. Of its worth.

Rutten said that some buildings in the county school system have been damaged, but the district and county are making plans to help students, staff and teachers affected by the earthquake.

Rutten also said the Red Cross is currently sheltering 19 people from 10 families.

Sparta Mayor Wes Bringar said many families in the county need financial help because many of them do not have earthquake insurance policies.

“We need your help,” Brennegar said. “Older people here in our community cannot afford to repair their homes because they will not be covered by insurance. Don’t forget Sparta and Ghana’s county.”

Both Bhringar County Mayor and Bill Osman songs stressed the need for both state and federal aid to help the community rebuild, and asked state legislators and North Carolina congressional representatives to help bring disaster relief money into the area.

Beringar also urged residents of Ghani county and Sparta to contact local officials if they had not yet reported the damage to their homes and businesses.

“If you haven’t checked your property, contact them,” Brinegar said.

Brinegar also advised residents not to fall online for the personal scams plaguing society. He said neither the town of Sparta nor the Ghanaian county are linked to any of the GoFundMe pages, and any Facebook pages that residents may see are fake.

“Don’t donate to someone you don’t know,” Brengar said.

He also warned of a construction scam where people claiming to be contractors offer to repair damages, but after they are paid up front, they don’t return to complete the job.

Brengar said, “Don’t cheat with your money.”

Brinegar recommended that anyone wanting to help donate to the American Red Cross and indicate that they would like to set aside money for the NC Alleghany County earthquake.
