The ICRC team arrives at remote communities affected by the earthquake in Kunar
There is still a single house standing in the Masoud area in the Nurgal area in the wake of the devastating earthquake in the remote Konar region of Afghanistan, which killed more than 2,200 people last month. Of the 1,000 people, about 60 of their lives, and about 130 injuries suffered when their homes – made of stone, clay or clay – were collapsed – while the Earth shook on the night of August 31.
The ICRC team managed to reach a village days after the earthquake and witnessed the scale of the destruction. Societies continue to live in temporary camps under very difficult circumstances, and lack necessities such as food, water and basic health care. Many are shocked and afraid to return to their destroyed homes due to the risk that the final tremors will lead to the collapse of buildings.
David Shah lost nine members of his family in the earthquake, including his wife, children, mother and brother. “People no longer have homes. They don't have food,” he said. “Everything there was now under the rubble. Nothing is now.”
The first respondents recounted how to get help and wounded by the earthquake more difficult through the landslide collapses that are already harmful to the road network limited in the area.
Al -Assad Allah, a resident of Dara Nour, said: “We had to walk for three hours, and when we got to the affected area, the scene seemed to be the day of the ruling.” He said that in some cases, helicopters became the only way to transport people who need urgent care for hospitals. “The clinic is far from our area, it takes about one hour to reach it.”
The International Committee's response included the brought in its donated medical supplies, such as clothes and oral and intravenous groups, cakes and wheelchairs to regional hospitals in Nangarhar and Konar, which receives a flow from hundreds of injured patients. It also provides vehicles to the ambulance department in Kabul, which is part of the response to emergency situations, as well as equipment and supplies to the branch of the Afghan Red Crescent region (ARCS). A Mobile team in Arcs provides basic health services for remote areas in the Nurgal area once a week.
“Until now, we have helped about 1,100 people who were wounded by the earthquake alone.” He added that some patients need long -term care due to the arm, leg or spine fractures. “They will stay in neurosurgery, orthopedic and public surgery for treatment.”
The physical rehabilitation center in the table in Jalalabad branched into the main hospitals in Nanghar and Konar with male and female teams to provide physical therapy for survivors from the earthquake. This is a basic service that is often not given as part of medical treatment in Afghanistan and can help prevent long -term complications for large shocks and wounds in the spinal cord.
In addition to losing lives, many people face severe economic hardship in the future. Most people in Masoud depend on livestock on their livelihoods, which are now in danger because many of their cows and goats were killed in the disaster. Water and channels are also destroyed by the earthquake, while food and shelter supply are limited. As in other villages, women and children can see begging next to the road.
“These societies here that have suffered from the need for human support,” said Ajkil Desprress, a member of the ICRC team in the Nurgal region in the Kunar region, noting that the earthquake follows contracts of armed conflict and the effects of climate change that already affect people in East Afghanistan.

“This is Achilles Despress from the International Committee of the Red Cross. We are now at the Nangarhar Regional Hospital, it is one of the hospitals that receive victims from the terrible tragedy that struck East Afghanistan more than a week ago, some of them have received the patient. The stories they shared with me are just a tragedy. The earthquake.

“These societies are very far and difficult. Many methods have been banned as a result of the earthquake, and ICRC, along with the relevant authorities, has spread machines to support the opening of these roads until more of this aid destroys, as there was anything. It left ruins.

Soundbite Fahimullah, President of Nangarhar Hospital. (In the Pashto)
“We have received and taught the injured in the earthquake. So far, about 1,100 people have helped the earthquake alone. They were brought here, and we provided treatment for them.
Among them are more than 600 patients in bed, about 46 % of them are females and 54 % of male patients. They all received a good treatment and went out, but we still have about 100 other patients under treatment.
They are patients who need long -term health care. Some of them have an arm, leg and spine fractures. They will remain in neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery for treatment. We thank ICRC. We helped in the early stage and also continued to support them. In particular, they were helping us in physical rehabilitation and they came here to get support. For example, they gave us mobile chairs, and they helped the wounded. Yesterday they came here to provide physical therapy for patients. Their services and assistance were effective for us to treat the injured. They have provided full support to us and the reason we have provided good health care for patients is because of the ICRC and other relevant organizations that provided their assistance. “

Soundbite Dawood Shah, wounded. (In Basto)
“I was under the rubble. I was pulled by two people. When they took me out, they left me on the ground, and they left to withdraw the other martyrs. There are 9 martyrs in our family. My family was inside the house, and I was sleeping on the balcony. There is no place in his place.
08:22 to 09:56
Soundbite Assadullah, Dara Noor District Resident (in the Pashto)
11:30 pm I received a call [letting me know] Such an accident occurred.
I immediately arrived at Dara Nour [district] After saving my father, my cousin and I went to the shrine of Dara [valley]. When we got to Dara's shrine, we saw all the rooms [of the house] He fell to people at home and no one survived.
25 people died, and 23 others were injured. All homes were destroyed in our village. When we moved forward from the Nurgal area, the roads were also cracked.
The rocks fell on the roads from the mountains and there was no way to move forward in the car. We had to walk for three hours and when we got to the affected area, the scene seemed to be the day of the ruling. The circumstances were unclear, no one knows what to do. When I got there, we did all the rescue efforts ourselves. But I thank the people of Nangarhar that they arrived in the area to help us. The wounded and dead were removed from the rubble by ourselves. We did not see any way to transfer them, then came the helicopter that transported the wounded and dead. The clinic is far from our area, it takes about one hour to reach it. We do not have a clinic in our region where four villages live. The clinic is very far from us. “
