The program continues to respond to earthquakes in Afghanistan
Kabul, Afghanistan – one month ago since a strong earthquake of 6.0 degrees that struck East Afghanistan on August 31 – followed by a series of subsequent tremors that doubled the destruction – the World Food Program (WFP) continues to quickly provide food assistance to affected societies and support logistics for the wider man's response.
Below is an update on the WFP earthquake in Afghanistan.
Food security situation
Earthquakes have exacerbated the food security crisis and the already critical nutrition throughout the country, as more than 9 million people face acute food insecurity and acute malnutrition between children and mothers at record levels. Even before the earthquake, the eastern provinces were in Kunar and Nangarhar – the most difficult earthquake – faced levels of the crisis of acute malnutrition, due to severe discounts in financing and humanitarian services. The program teams are afraid that the situation will deteriorate more. The earthquake area also faces a flow of Afghan families that have been forcibly expelled from Pakistan, and many returning to the broken homes and agricultural lands in East Afghanistan. Language programming teams on Earth note that are disturbing levels of acute malnutrition between returning mothers and children, which doubles pressure on limited human resources. The situation is expected to deteriorate more with the start of winter and remote societies, including in the mountainous East, are isolated with snow and rain.
Program operations
The World Food Program was the first international agency to reach the province of Konar, where food aid was provided within hours of the earthquake. CFP provided an emergency food assistance to more than 58,000 people in Kunar, Nangarhar and Laghman provinces. The United Nations -led humanitarian air service (UNSAS) has facilitated flights to transport both passengers and relief goods to Jalalabad, a city located near the earthquake center. UNSAS also published a helicopter to transport employees and provide relief supplies to the damaged remote areas. As part of its logistical support for the broader human community, CFP has coordinated the transfer of relief supplies from multiple sites to societies affected by the earthquake – with additional connections currently underway. CFP has also prepared storage tents to support the broader humanitarian response. Supporting information and communications technology services to the human community, WFP has published Vsat Internet and UHF Radio Services in Konar Province to facilitate emergency operations. The World Food Program has installed solar energy systems to ensure sustainable energy for critical communications and human coordination.
Operating challenges and financing
The region affected by the earthquake is a mountainous area, where it left off-terrain, poor road networks and the fully weak communities of communities-which makes it difficult for humanitarian teams to respond. The country's response continues at the country level in the face of a large financing shortage, forcing the purposes to limit support to less than a million people per month. The last earthquake put more pressure on the already extended resources. The total financing gap in the WFP program in Afghanistan is $ 622 million for the next six months. The WFP earthquake in eastern Afghanistan was possible thanks to the contributions of the Asian Development Bank, Canada, Japan, Switzerland and the United Nations.
