The Philippine city of Cebu records more than 9,000 aftershocks following a strong earthquake

MANILA (Reuters) – More than 9,000 aftershocks have rocked Cebu City since last week's devastating earthquake, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said on Wednesday.

At least 72 people were killed and 500 injured on September 30, when a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the central Philippine province, the strongest quake to hit the region in more than a decade.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the city of Bogo and most of the victims were in its vicinity, but strong tremors and damage were also recorded in Cebu City, the provincial capital, about 100 kilometers away.

“As of 6 a.m., we recorded 9,037. The strongest tremor so far is the October 3 tremor, which had a magnitude of 5.1,” PHIVOLCS director Dr. Teresito Paculcol told local TV channel Dobol B.

In an afternoon update, PHIVOLCS said the number of aftershocks had risen to 9,308.

Charmaine F said: “Strong aftershocks can lead to further damage to structures previously affected by the main shock, and can lead to landslides, especially in mountainous areas where stress cracks are already visible,” Villamil, a geologist and senior researcher at PHIVOLCS, told Arab News.

“It can cause more sinkholes, and it can also cause coastal subsidence and lateral spreading – liquefaction.”

Liquefaction is a process that occurs after earthquakes that causes solid soil to behave like a liquid – often resulting in severe damage – buildings or roads may sink or collapse even if they are not directly damaged by the shaking.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council estimated that as of Wednesday, more than 62,500 homes had been damaged by the quake and subsequent tremors.

The earthquake was the strongest to hit the central region of the Philippines in more than a decade.

The entire province of Cebu, with a population of 3.5 million people, was thrown into a state of disaster following the earthquake, which came just weeks after the region was hit by two successive typhoons.

Although Cebu lies outside the country's usual typhoon path, it still experiences strong storms and is prone to earthquakes because it is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

In 2013, at least 215 people were killed when a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Cebu City and the neighboring island province of Bohol.
