Human remains found in Japan have been identified as those of a girl missing since the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Japanese police announced today, Friday, that human remains found in Japan have been identified as those of a 6-year-old girl who has been missing since the devastating earthquake and tsunami in 2011.

The disaster killed 15,900 people, and 2,520 people were still missing at the end of February, according to the National Police Agency.

A local police spokesman told AFP that teeth and jaw fragments were discovered in February 2023 in the northern Miyagi prefecture.

He added: “After analyzing the teeth and DNA, it was confirmed that the remains belonged to female Natsus Yamane, who was six years old at the time.”

The Japan Times reported, citing Miyagi police, that analysis of mitochondrial DNA and examination of proteins found on the teeth confirmed the girl's identity. Experts from Tohoku University helped with the analysis, Japan Today reported.

The girl was at her home in Yamada, a town about 60 miles away in Iwate Prefecture, when she was swept away by the tsunami, a police spokesman told AFP.

She has been listed as missing ever since.

The Asahi Shimbun daily newspaper reported that construction workers found the remains while sifting through material collected during a clean-up of coastal areas.

The child's family issued a statement of thanks.

“We had long given up (on finding her remains), so when we were notified, we were surprised. We are very grateful,” Japan Today quoted the family as saying.

Asahi said the last time remains were identified in the three prefectures most affected by the disaster – Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima – was in August 2023. Japan Today reported that the unidentified remains of six other people were in the custody of authorities in the prefecture.

A 9.0 magnitude earthquake in March 2011 also led to the collapse of three reactors at the Fukushima nuclear plant in the largest atomic disaster of this century.
