The Mariners' historic win caused a “mini-earthquake,” says a seismologist.

Did you feel that rumble Friday night when Jorge Polanco hit the winning single in the 15th inning to advance the Seattle Mariners to the American League Championship Series?

Probably not, if you weren't among the more than 47,000 fans attending the sold-out T-Mobile Park game who jumped, screamed and clapped in celebration of the Mariners' historic win over the Detroit Tigers.

But for those lucky attendees, the ground briefly felt like a “mini-earthquake” — similar to a large truck passing by — according to seismologist Mouse Roach of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, who installed a makeshift seismometer on the ground floor of the stadium.

The seismometer measures ground vibrations caused by fans in the stands, “mostly from people jumping up and down,” Roach said. She said the network plans to keep the device installed as long as the Mariners are in the playoffs.

Throughout Friday's game, the network posted real-time readings of seismic activity on its website, along with annotations highlighting key moments from Friday's game that can be spotted in the waveforms.

Ruych said that a “small larva” of waves formed just after 5 p.m. when the players came out to play the national anthem.

When the Mariners' George Kirby struck out the Tigers' Spencer Torkelson to end the top of the first inning, “that was our first real test of our ability to see changes in the crowd's movement, how moved they were with excitement,” Roche said.

The wave flattened when Kerry Carpenter hit a two-run homer to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning.

“People weren't happy, so people just kind of stand there,” Roche said.

The first big walk-off of the game came when Mariner Leo Rivas hit a single to tie the game in the seventh inning. The seismologist called it the “Rivas Rumble.”

Then there was a long lull in the great seismic activity, as the innings continued and the crowd's energy waned. “We've been going for a long time,” Roche said.

Just before 10 p.m., seismologists saw an uptick: the crowd woke up again and the stadium shook with jubilation during the second salmon run of the night, as the Humpy Salmon cruised triumphantly across the finish line for its first-ever victory.

Finally, the seismometer registered a huge jump, dubbed Polanco's P wave, when Polanco hit the game-winning single in the 15th inning.

Roach said the vibrations from the cheering crowd lasted longer than the “Rivas Rumble,” but technically the peak was only slightly louder.

“Who knows, maybe people weren't jumping as much because they were tired,” Roche said. “But they were definitely very excited.”
