The ShakeOut 2025 experience is an opportunity to prepare for a real earthquake

It's always a good idea to be prepared for an earthquake, even if there's a very small chance of a major one occurring in Auckland.

Exercise ShakeOut, New Zealand's national earthquake and tsunami drill, will take place on Thursday 16 October at 9.30am.

Adam Maggs, Auckland's general manager of emergency management, says this is an opportunity for Aucklanders to practice some simple actions in preparation for a real earthquake.

“We know that the risk of a large earthquake hitting Tamaki Makurau is small, but it is useful to know what to do if you are hit by a real earthquake or tsunami.

“I encourage all Aucklanders to join the rest of Aotearoa and participate in ShakeOut.

“This is also another great opportunity for Aucklanders to think about how prepared they are for a natural disaster – including having a home emergency plan, talking with family and friends about what to do in the event of an emergency and how to stay informed.”

What you need to know about ShakeOut

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) encourages all families, schools and organizations to officially sign up for ShakeOut. When you register, you will have the option to enter a drawing to win a prize.

· ShakeOut will be held on Thursday, October 16 at 9:30 a.m

· It is a self-guided earthquake and tsunami drill – Mobile Emergency Alert (EMA) will not be sent

· You can perform the exercise in any way that suits you. All you have to do is land, cover and hold for 60 seconds, and practice your evacuation if you are in a tsunami evacuation zone by walking to higher ground or inland on foot or bike

· There are resources you can use to encourage your friends, family and colleagues to practice earthquake and tsunami drills. Download posters, fact sheets and more here.

· All of New Zealand is at risk from earthquakes and tsunamis. Practicing tsunami hikoi is an easy way for you and those around you to learn the correct actions to take.

Before your ShakeOut workout

Drop, cover, hold

In an earthquake: drop, cover, catch. It prevents you from being hit, makes you a smaller target for falling and flying objects, and protects your head, neck and vital organs.

Get down on your hands and knees. This protects you from falling but allows you to move around if you need to. Cover your head and neck (or your entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk (if it is a few steps away from you).

If there is no shelter nearby, cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.

Hold on to your shelter (or position to protect your head and neck) until the shaking stops. If shaking changes your shelter, move with it.

If there is no shelter nearby, crawl to an inner corner of the room and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms.

Do not run outside or stand in the doorway. Many people are injured while trying to move during the shaking.

It is safer to drop it, cover it, and hold it until the shaking is over.

Mr Maggs says emergencies can affect people differently, and not everyone can 'go down' easily.

“That's why it's important for each of us to practice the version of 'drop, cover and wait' that best suits our situation,” he says.

“For example, if you use a wheelchair, you can lock, cover, and hold; or if you have a mobility disability, you can sit, cover, and hold. What matters most is knowing what works for you and practicing it.”

If you use a walker or wheelchair

If you use a walker or wheelchair: Lock, cover and hold.

Lock your wheels and get as low as possible. Bend over and cover your head and neck as much as possible. Then continue until the shaking stops.

Long or strong: leave

Earthquakes can generate tsunamis.

It's important to recognize the normal warning signs of a tsunami and remember that if the earthquake is long or strong: Leave.
