Who and the European Union triggers cooperation to improve digitized health systems in Subsaharian Africa
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Union (EU) today have published a new agreement on the support of the digital transformation of health care systems and the broader adoption of the global network for digital health certification (GDHCN) in Subsaharian Africa. This EU-Koji partnership will improve a pandemic willingness and accelerates progress to better health and well-being for everyone.
The agreement was announced by Dr. Yukiko Nakatani at the World Health Summit, who is Assistant General Director for Health Systems, Access and Data; Dr. Mohamed Yakub Janabi, Regional Director of Africa; and Mr. Martin Seychell, Deputy CEO of the European Commission, Director General of International Partnerships.
GDHCN is a global system that allows countries to safely and reliably verify nationally approved credentials for digital health across borders. The system is based on the European Union (EU DCC) digital certificate, which has facilitated checking certification for vaccination, testing and recovery for international passengers connecting 76 countries and territories. However, only four countries from the African region Who – Benin, Cabo Verde, Seychelles and Togo – could join the EU DCC network.
Since his transfer to WHO 2023, GDHCN has shown a strong potential for supporting digitization of international vaccination or profilexion (ICVP), usually known as a yellow card, in accordance with the updated international health regulations (IHR). Exploiting its potential could improve global vaccination monitoring, reduce fraud and simplify international health requirements.
According to the new joint agreement, which includes EU support of EU of EUR 8 million, which extends in the amount of 2025 to 2028, which will also cooperate the European Union on the strengthening of national efforts to improve the digital transformation of health care systems in Subsahar's Africa. Which will provide technical and political expertise, in cooperation with regional partners such as African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (African CDC).
Investing in the EU is part of the digital health care of the EU's EU health partnership initiative, which brings together European and African stakeholders to build resistant digital health ecosystems on the entire continent and in line with the Global Gateway EU Strategy.
Empowering countries and people
GDHCN supports countries in the construction of reliable, interoperative digital health systems that directly use people – providing safe, portable health cards available wherever they travel, including during emergencies. Each single state or their health system is safely managed by personal health documents. These records cannot access other parties, including who.
The network was built on internationally recognized standards for privacy, data protection and interoperability, and the participation of the countries is voluntary. The network promotes cross -border cooperation between countries and partners, strengthening health security today, simultaneously laying the basis for more resistant health systems aimed at a person for future generations.
