CSUF brings interactive earthquake simulator to campus | news

The Cal State Fullerton Police Department is bringing an interactive earthquake simulator to the CSUF Quad on October 15 from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., in collaboration with the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services

The event will include a simulation of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake lasting about 30 seconds.

The overall thought process behind the simulation is to “get everyone in California prepared for the next big earthquake,” said John Goodale, senior emergency services coordinator for earthquake early warning at Cal OES.

This simulation allows people to understand the magnitude and severity of a major earthquake.

While held at CSUF, the simulator is open to the public. “People from both on-campus and off-campus can come and ride the simulator,” Goodell said.

The purpose of this program is to prepare students for potentially strong earthquakes in the future.

“Our goal is to provide the community with knowledge and some real-world experience in a safe, controlled environment,” Marissa Garza, public affairs and communications specialist for the CSUF Police Department, wrote in an email. “Earthquakes, even for those who have lived with them all their lives, can be scary. We like to replace fear with knowledge.”

Emergency Management and Continuity Coordinator Eric Dalton highlighted that events like this represent a good opportunity for the campus to reach out and become more aware.

“We encourage anyone interested to stop by, try out the simulator and take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about earthquake preparedness,” Dalton wrote in an email. “It's also an opportunity to share other preparedness resources and answer any questions people may have about how to stay safe during emergencies.”

This simulation event is part of the Great California ShakeOut Tour – a tour that goes to multiple campuses around the Cal State University system. This year the tour is scheduled to visit four separate venues in California, including CSUF.

Overall, this event is held to ensure that the CSUF community is prepared with the knowledge needed to stay safe in the event of an earthquake.

To stay prepared, Gudel also recommends downloading Shake, an app that provides a 30-second alert for upcoming earthquakes here in California.

“So imagine…we have 30 seconds where we feel the earthquake, we can protect ourselves, and if we're driving, we can stop on the side of the road,” Goodale said. “The further you stay away from it, the more time you have, and this could save your life.”
