The annual Great ShakeOut at 10:16 a.m. on Thursday, October 16 gives individuals, organizations and communities an opportunity to practice earthquake preparedness drills.

The 7.3 magnitude Landers earthquake, followed by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake, struck the Big Bear, San Bernardino County areas on June 28, 1992.

The Landers earthquake occurred shortly before 5 a.m. and was followed three hours later by the Big Bear earthquake. The strong tremors resulted in the death of one person, the injury of more than 400 people, and losses estimated at $91 million.

The California Department of Environmental Conservation listed the Landers earthquake as the sixth strongest earthquake recorded in California since 1800.
