A 3.1 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter struck the Berkeley area Thursday morning

BERKELEY — A 3.1 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in the Berkeley area struck Thursday morning, an official said.

No immediate damage or injuries were reported.

The quake, which was felt in surrounding towns, struck about 9:23 a.m. and struck five miles below the surface about a mile east of Berkeley, officials said.

It was the first major tremor since a series of earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 4.3 to 1.0 were felt in the same area during the week of September 22.

The quake came less than an hour before an earthquake drill scheduled for Thursday morning, the Great California Earthquake.
