Brevard feels tremors from a 6.1 magnitude earthquake west of Mantua, Cuba

The quake, which measured 6.1 on the Richter scale and was located 73 miles west of Mantua, Cuba, led to reports of “shaking around the Orlando, Jacksonville and Miami areas,” National Weather Service meteorologist Cole Feling said in a statement to Florida Today.

There are no reports of damage from Brevard

While Brevard County spokeswoman Rachel Hurst said there were no reports of damage, social media was full of posts about tremors everywhere from Florida Tech in Melbourne and condominiums on Merritt Island to the Moore Justice Center in Viera and along several corridors in Palm Bay.

Merritt Island apartment resident Bridget Reed, who lives on the fifth floor of her building, was folding laundry when the bed started shaking.

“I thought the Surfside situation was starting to happen,” she said, referring to the collapse of an apartment building in Surfside, Florida, on June 24, 2021, which resulted from a structural failure and killed dozens.

“I looked at the plants in our apartment and they were moving too. I got my keys and walked out. I didn’t see anyone, so I was thinking it was all in my mind or maybe a chase had started.”

Melbourne resident Deidre Comeges, who lives near the Brevard Zoo, was sitting with her feet up when she “felt something like a vibration.”

The former FLORIDA TODAY journalist quickly learned that the shaking came from an earthquake near Cuba, and posts began circulating on social media.

“I thought a big truck had passed,” she said. “no.”

“You don’t have to be on the same plate” to feel a tremor

Experts say that this was a fairly strong earthquake, and that aftershocks are not unlikely.

Research assistant professor Jochen Braunmiller of the University of South Florida in Tampa said earthquakes of this magnitude “are often felt hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter. This is not unusual at all.”

“This was a fairly strong earthquake. We’re about 430 miles away in Tampa, and there were some people who felt it in our building here on campus. There were some little things swaying.”

Although Cuba lies along the North American plate, the quake appears to have been an intraplate event, a seismic event that occurs far from plate boundaries, Brownmiller said. Aftershocks are also expected, although smaller.

The windows shook, and the cabins shook

For many on the Space Coast, the immediate reaction was not an earthquake occurring.

Jennifer Wolfe was working in her office in Palm Bay when the windows suddenly started shaking, the movement lasting several seconds.

“The cabins shook… and you could hear the glass cracking. We didn’t know what was happening,” a Palm Bay resident said.

I think of the construction work going on nearby before her colleagues learned of the earthquake.

“This is definitely not what you think about when you live in Florida,” Wolf said.

In Rockledge, Pastor Sean Ferguson was working on the house when he heard the glass shake and felt the house moving.

“It was a little scary,” said Ferguson, the Rockledge City Council member.

“I was doing some paperwork when it happened. I’d never felt an earthquake in Rockledge; that was something else.”

The US Geological Survey also reported that the earthquake measured 6.1 on the Richter scale.

“This is absolutely crazy,” said Randy Parkinson, an associate professor of geology at Florida International University, upon hearing news of the quake.

“This is unique.”

Florida lies on a separate tectonic plate from Cuba, and lies on a more negative geological margin. “You don’t have to be on the same plate to feel the shivers,” Parkinson explained.

“Normally, the movement is not continuous,” he said. Parkinson added that it is an instantaneous release of energy in all directions.

“I think it’s a reminder, in terms of geological risks,” he said, adding that the Earth is a dynamic, moving surface, with an outer crust that “floats on what carries the convection.”

A database that tracks earthquakes

The FLORIDA TODAY Earthquake Database contains a map and graphs of earthquakes, including a map that tracks by state how many earthquakes have occurred and how often each year.
