Today's Earthquake: A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao, Philippines, on Friday, October 17, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ).

This comes just one week after two strong earthquakes occurred off the coast of the country. On October 10, twin earthquakes struck Mindanao in the southern Philippines.

Previous earthquakes

The first quake, with a magnitude of 7.4, killed at least seven people, caused landslides, and prompted the evacuation of nearby coastal areas amid a brief tsunami warning. However, tsunami warnings for both the Philippines and Indonesia were later withdrawn.

The second earthquake, with an initial magnitude of 6.8, led to a local tsunami warning being issued. The two tremors were caused by movement along the same fault line, the Philippine Trench, at a depth of 37 kilometers (23 miles) off the town of Manai in Davao Oriental province, according to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology head Teresito Bakulcol. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned that waves could rise more than a meter (3.2 feet) above normal sea levels.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., facing the latest natural disaster after a recent deadly earthquake and successive storms, said potential damage was being assessed and rescue and relief teams were being prepared and would be deployed when it was safe to do so.

Residents living in coastal areas in the southern Philippines were “strongly advised to evacuate immediately” to higher ground or move further inland, according to the official warning.

Phivolcs director Teresito Paculcol referred to the two powerful quakes as “double” quakes, separate but closely timed and striking along a large undersea trench off the country’s east coast.

While the full extent of the destruction remains uncertain, initial reports from Manai indicated damage to homes, buildings and bridges. Civil defense official Ednar Dayangirang confirmed that at least seven people were killed in towns and cities near the epicenter.

The two earthquakes are among the strongest tremors that have struck the Philippines in recent years. The country lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and is regularly hit by more than 800 earthquakes annually.

These earthquakes occurred just two weeks after the Philippines suffered its deadliest earthquake in more than a decade, when a 6.9-magnitude quake killed 74 people on the central island of Cebu.
