Nearly 1 million San Diegans participate in the Great California Shakeout – NBC 7 San Diego

Nearly 1 million San Diego County residents participated Thursday in this year's Great California ShakeOut, the statewide earthquake preparedness drill, now in its 17th year.

A total of 980,458 participants in San Diego registered to stop everything for a minute to “drop, cover and wait” at 10:16 a.m. Statewide, more than 10.3 million Californians are registered.

During last year's event, about 10.6 million people statewide registered to participate. Training began in 2008.

“What we do to prepare now, before the next big earthquake, will determine how well we can survive and recover,” according to a statement posted on ShakeOut.org. “The Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill is a once-a-year opportunity for everyone to practice ‘Drop, Cover and Hold’ and learn other earthquake safety tips.”

From 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services will bring a “shake trailer” to Waterfront Park, allowing the public to experience a simulated earthquake of up to 7.0 magnitude. The public will also be able to obtain information about earthquake early warning technology, preparedness tips and recommended life-saving actions.

Municipalities whose employees participate in this annual event include Imperial Beach, National City, Oceanside, Santee, Solana Beach and the San Diego Parks and Recreation Department. The San Diego County Office of Emergency Services and the San Diego Public Library will also participate.

“This annual event is the perfect reminder to make sure your family and loved ones have an emergency plan,” said Christopher Heiser, executive director of the San Diego Office of Emergency Services. “Whether it's an earthquake, wildfire, flood, power outage or other disaster, your home should be adequately supplied in case of an emergency. Resources are available to help San Diegans create their individual emergency plans and prepare for disasters.”

Virtually all local elementary and high school districts were expected to participate, along with California State University, San Diego Community College campuses, UC San Diego and the University of San Diego.

According to ShakeOut.org, the goal is to emphasize precautions during an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 or larger along the southern portion of the San Andreas Fault.

Officials believe such a tectonic shift could produce waves of motion for hundreds of miles, over a period of four minutes. According to the US Geological Survey, about 2,000 people will die, tens of thousands will be injured, and losses worth more than $200 billion will result. The disaster would be 50 times stronger than the Northridge earthquake that occurred on January 17, 1994.

Hundreds of aftershocks will follow — a few of them roughly as large as the original quake, according to the USGS, which also estimates there is a 99% chance of an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 or greater hitting California before 2044.

San Diego County has a 93% chance of a major earthquake occurring within 50 kilometers of the area within the next 50 years. The Rose Canyon Fault, which runs along the coast from La Jolla to downtown, has an 18% chance of an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 or larger occurring within the next 30 years.

Californians must be prepared to be self-sufficient for 72 hours after a major disaster. This includes obtaining a first aid kit, medications, food and enough water for each family member to drink one gallon per day, according to local and state officials.

Homeowners and renters should also know how to turn off the gas in their residences in the event of a leak.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
