Since late September 2025, the Philippines has experienced a series of powerful and devastating earthquakes affecting multiple regions, especially Visayas and Mindanao.
The most devastating earthquake in this latest sequence was the M7.4 earthquake off the eastern coast of Mindanao on October 10, which left at least 9 dead and more than 900 injured. The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 58 kilometers (36 miles), resulting in strong shaking across Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte and Davao Oriental. According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), a tsunami warning was briefly issued but later cancelled.
Just hours later, a powerful M6.7 aftershock struck the same area, followed by additional significant aftershocks, including a M6.0 aftershock near Aras-Asan, Mindanao, on October 11. The USGS reported that these aftershocks are part of an ongoing sequence of aftershocks from the main M7.4 event.
A powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Cebu and Leyte on September 30, killing at least 69 people and injuring more than 200 others. The earthquake caused widespread structural damage throughout the central Philippines, triggering landslides and disrupting transportation throughout Leyte and Cebu provinces.
