AGFC opens new earthquake-fueled kayaking adventure in Northeast Arkansas | Sports

Truman – The newest water trail added to the wildlife destinations that can be seen on the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has been around for a long time – about 208 years.

The St. Francis Sunken Lands Water Trail in Poinsett County from the effects of the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-12 and offers canoe and boat enthusiasts a rare sight of the creatures that call these hardwoods in the Lower Lands.

“It hasn’t really been 200 years for this trail to happen, but it has been a long process to get that pathway,” said Kirsten Bartlow, AGFC’s Wildlife Seekers Coordinator. “But the region has a unique history that stems from that era.”

The flooded lands formed when earthquakes shook the mid-south. Seismic activity lowered the ground along the St. Francis River from 6 to 8 feet over an area of about 30 miles. Lake Reliefoot was formed in Tennessee during the same event.

“The history books tell us that an earthquake was extremely violent, causing the Mississippi River to flow back for a short time,” Bartlow said.

Although the water path has been on the “To Do” list for some time, Bartlow takes credit for Jessica Homan, a biologist in the Wildlife Management District of St. Francis Sunkenland’s Wildlife Management District in the AGFC and Lake St. Francis Association for pushing the ball. Cross the goal line.

They were the true fans of this, Bartlow said, and Jessica has done a lot of legal work on the ground to make it happen. “They wanted to attract more people and interest in their area and they were a big part of creating it.”

The new water course winds its way through 10 miles of the Sunken Lands, and three access points provide track entry with informational markings at the launch of the boat. All access points are popular with waterfowl hunters who frequent the St. Francis Sunkenland Wildlife Management District in the winter.

The trail starts at Iron Bridge Access, runs through Steven’s Landing Access, and then onto Oak Donnick Access. The water is relatively calm, with little current unless there is recent rain. Kayaking is possible both upstream and downstream in the wider parts of flooded lands.

“I would suggest visiting someone for the first time in Oak Doneck and kayaking upstream, exploring all the cypress swamps and wildlife in the area that locals call ‘the wide waters,’ and then returning a paddle,” Bartlow said. “There is a nice little ring they can make where they see New ground for the whole buoy. “

Bartlow cautions not to use lane markers once you get to the St. Francis River, and rowing should download a geo-delimited map, available at www.agfc.com/en/explore-outdoors/wildlife -viewing / water-trails / Saint Francis Street-Sunken Street Land Trail

“We have created a virtual map that people can download to their phones that will keep them on the right track,” Bartlow said. You need to download the ‘Avenza’ app and add the grounds of St. Francis Sunken, then you can follow the path using the location services feature on your phone. We have a few water trails and wildlife sites that can be seen that use this technology, so it is an app that many rowers will find. The free version of the app allows you to download three maps simultaneously. “

Bartlow says the virtual map will also help paddlers stay on their lane and prevent any issues with private property.

“The area is a chessboard of private and public lands, so it is very important to observe respect for private property,” Bartlow said. “It shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the trail, though. As long as you are on the road, you won’t have any problems, just stay away from any special, privileged grounds.”

Although the buoy is mostly flat water, Bartlow says users should familiarize yourself with the Saint Francis River water gauge in Tullet. If the water is at or below 212 feet MSL, the driveway should be good for buoyancy, but above this mark could mean an excessive current and potential debris in the driveway.

It’s really a fun buoy, even in summer, ”Bartlow said. “The secluded areas have plenty of shade to stay comfortable, and you’re likely to see a variety of songbirds and wildlife. Some of the colorful birds that call the area home, not to mention beavers, mink and all kinds of reptiles. Then, in winter, the area comes alive with migratory waterfowl.” Just make sure you know when the waterfowl hunting season is open and know that the area is used by many people for different activities. “

Other rowers can engage along the water trail which is the extensive fishing all over the St. Francis River. Bassfish, crappie, bream, and catfish make excellent targets in secluded parts of the river, and the area was formerly known for catching trophy-quality crocodile fish. The lightweight combo of a rod and reel, a bunch of deer, crappy dance, and a soft plastic bait should provide plenty of action for runners looking for an extra amount of excitement.
