Thousands of residents on a Philippine island have fled their homes along the Pacific coast, rescue officials said, as weather forecasters warned of coastal flooding ahead of the approach of Tropical Storm Fengshen.

The eye of the storm is expected to pass near Catanduanes, a poor island with a population of 270,000, later Saturday with winds of up to 80 kilometers per hour.

The state meteorological service said Fengshen would bring heavy rain, along with a “small to moderate risk” of coastal flooding due to waves as high as 1.2 meters (3.2 feet) pushing ashore.

The regional disaster office said more than 9,000 Catanduanes residents had moved to safer areas, in a repeat exercise on the island that was previously the first large area to be hit by typhoons forming in the western Pacific.

Rescue official Jerry Rubio told AFP that the Catanduanes provincial government had ordered local officials to “activate their evacuation plans” for residents of “high-risk areas,” including the coast, low-lying communities and slopes prone to landslides.

The Philippines is hit by an average of 20 storms and typhoons every year, hitting disaster-prone areas where millions of poor people live.

Scientists warn that storms are becoming more powerful as the planet warms due to human-caused climate change.

Fengchen comes as the country is still reeling from a series of major earthquakes and typhoons that have claimed dozens of lives in recent weeks.

Earlier this month, at least 79 people were killed in a 6.9-magnitude earthquake in the central Philippine province of Cebu.

Days later, another 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck, this time off the coast of the southern Philippines, killing at least six people and triggering a second 6.9-magnitude earthquake later in the day. Tsunami warnings were issued after every earthquake.

In late September, several people were killed and thousands were evacuated from villages and schools in the northern Philippines, while offices were closed, when Typhoon Rajasa struck.
