California earthquake simulation trailer prepares residents for 'big quake'

California Office of Emergency Services shakes residents.

An earthquake simulator called the “Shake Trailer” is touring the state this week to help people prepare for future earthquakes. Riders feel the force of a magnitude 7 earthquake and learn what they can do to better prepare.

California has 500 active fault lines that cause thousands of small tremors every year. However, experts expected that a major earthquake would have catastrophic consequences for the state.

The “largest” could kill up to 1,800 people and cause $200 billion in damage according to some estimates.

“Earthquakes are the only disasters that go unnoticed. … Earthquakes, as we're talking now, can happen, there's nothing preventing them from happening now. And I think that's what scares people,” said John Goodell, CAL OES staff.

The Shake Trailer is designed to help riders see what a massive earthquake might feel like.

After going on the ride, Randy Baxter, a professor from California State University, said, “It was much stronger than I thought. I've felt smaller earthquakes before, and at that level I realized I couldn't even stand up. Because you thought you could walk across the room or find an entrance or a safe place, but at this level you're going to be thrown all over the place.”

This prior experience can be invaluable in the event of a sudden disaster, when every second counts.

However, just riding the Shake Trailer isn't all residents can do.
