4.2 magnitude earthquake shakes the Big Island and beyond: The Big Island now
It was a natural moment, if you felt it, you felt it. If you don't, you don't do it. Otherwise, we'd say, there was too much explanation.
A 4.2 magnitude earthquake shook the Big Island and beyond for about 45 minutes at 8:26 a.m. Sunday (October 19), the Hawaii Volcano Observatory reported at 9:13 a.m. It struck 11 miles northwest of Kalawa and at a depth of 27 miles, offshore and near Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport.

The earthquake had no apparent impact on the Mauna Loa or Kilauea volcanoes. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to monitor both volcanoes for any changes.
Aftershocks are possible in the coming days or weeks.
There was no tsunami threat, and no damage to buildings or infrastructure was expected based on the intensity of the earthquake.
“Big shake!” exclaimed Michael Kunovic at 8:38 a.m. Sunday in the Waimea Insiders Facebook group.

“Yes[,] Good way to start the day!” answered Salina Perez.
Amanda Cohen in Kalua said in response to an 8:32 a.m. post in the Maui 24/7 group that she first heard a loud boom and then felt the ripples of the quake.
“Long rumble and clatter at Kawaiihai,” added Mark Marr.
Mark Seitz commented in “Captain Cook” that his dogs “freaked out” when the ground shook under their feet on Sunday morning when the quake struck.
“Yes. I felt it,” Heidi Miller replied simply.

More than 195 reports were filed within the first hour after the earthquake. There were 252 reports by 10:45 a.m
Community members and tools reported only mild shaking.
Most of the reports received, 70, came from the Kailua-Kona area shortly before 11 a.m. The second largest number, 43 reports, were filed by people in the Waimea area. Waikoloa residents also appear to be feeling the tremor well, with 33 reports coming from that area.
Seventeen people in the Honokaa area reported feeling the quake and 12 people in Hilo, bringing the felt report locations to close to double digits.
Interestingly, the farthest the earthquake was reported was to another Waimea in the islands, just over 276 miles away on Kauai.

The person described the earthquake as an I on the Modified Mercalli intensity scale — a tool used to measure increasing levels of earthquake intensity that range from imperceptible shaking to catastrophic destruction.
The AI generally means that while this person felt the tremor, most others in the area likely did not feel it, except under particularly favorable conditions. No damage was reported either.
Felt reports also came from numerous places around the Big Island as well as Maui and Oahu.
However, not everyone had the same rock and roll experience.
“Felt some shaking and heard some disturbing things,” Karen Tolhurst commented in a post made by the Hawai'i Island Radio Scanner Community Facebook group at 8:54 a.m.
Moriah Smith, although astonished by its recorded size, agreed that the rocker did not reach a significant level as it was at 1,500 feet, directly above Mahiola, when it struck. Maybe because it was too deep? All I felt was a little thud.
“funny [,] “I just thought it was people upstairs,” Ilya Polsky responded to the Maui 24/7 post.
Serena LaCour didn't seem sure, but she had a theory about what happened at her house: “I think my cat sensed it,” she commented in the same thread.
Others participated in the conversation, like Guan Ong, and shared thoughts on the level – or lack thereof – of greater seismic activity occurring around the island, especially with other geological forces at play.
“I'm surprised there hasn't been more of all this activity by Toto Pele,” Ong commented, speaking specifically about the ongoing episodic eruption at Kīlauea volcano on the Big Island, which just ended in the early morning of October 18 with the 35th episode of spectacular continuous lava fountains about 7.5 hours after molten rock erupted from both vents. In the Halema'uma'u pit inside. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Mike Manninen speculated that there may be some connection – although the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says otherwise – between the earthquake and the eruption.
“After 1[,]Lava fountains 500 feet tall[,] “There appears to be some pressure on this magma chamber,” Manninen wrote in a later comment on the Maui 24/7 thread.
However, others did not feel the ground moving under their feet at all on Sunday morning.
“strange!” exclaimed Claire Koenig in a comment on a Hawaii Island Scanner Radio community post. “I was next to the Pine Tree Cafe[é]In church, I didn't feel that way.
