8 aftershocks shake Kamchatka after a strong earthquake

At least eight aftershocks were recorded off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's Far East in the past 24 hours, the regional Ministry of Emergency Situations said Wednesday, about three months after the strongest earthquake to hit the region in more than 70 years.

The strength of the aftershocks ranged from 3.6 to 4.8 magnitude, and came in the wake of an 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the eastern coast of Kamchatka Island on July 30. Russian scientists said that the southern part of Kamchatka moved 2 meters (6 feet) southeast of the country due to the earthquake, the strongest ever since 1952.

The Ministry of Emergencies said that residents of local towns felt one of the tremors.

Regional seismologists also reported a 5.5-magnitude earthquake near the regional capital of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on the southeastern coast of the peninsula.

The tremors there reached four on the local intensity scale, but no tsunami warning was issued.

US Geological Survey data identified at least three of the recent earthquakes during an eight-hour period southeast of the offshore city of Vilyuchinsk in Southern Kamchatka.

The larger 5.1-magnitude quake struck around 5:30 a.m. Moscow time at a depth of 74 kilometers (46 miles).

Two others, magnitudes 4.7 and 4.4, were recorded at shallower depths of between 35 and 56.5 kilometers (22 and 35 miles).
