'An earthquake-like feeling' when scaffolding falls into the river

A building collapsed in Manchester city centre, as emergency services rushed to the scene.

Scaffolding at Alberton House, off Bridge Street, fell into the nearby River Irwell.

The building was partially demolished to make way for new development when scaffolding collapsed.

It is understood to be Alberton House, the Manchester Evening News reported.

Reports indicate that one side of the building has collapsed, causing scaffolding to fall into the adjacent River Irwell.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “A fire engine from Manchester Central attended St Mary's Church just after 2.50pm today after scaffolding on one of the partially demolished buildings collapsed.

“There are no people involved and the crew is leaving, leaving this with surveillance on the building.”

One eyewitness told the men: “We were shaking and didn’t know if the building was going to collapse, then we saw the plumes of dust.”

“We had to evacuate, about 500 people had to leave all day, and I have a lot of businesses here,” founder and owner of Cardinal House next door, George Jones, told the men.

“We had been aware of the renovations for some time, but were never told that we would have a safety scare or need to evacuate.”

“It sounded like an earthquake. People left because they didn't feel safe. When we then went to talk to the workers they asked us to evacuate the building.

“The scaffolding fell into the river and the building was moving. I bought my building and turned it into a business center two years ago. When I came out it looked like it was all smoke.”
