Senior Trump official’s claim over UK freedom of speech arrests rejected by No 10 | police

A senior Trump administration official’s claim that British police are arresting thousands of “free speech activists” has been rejected by the British government.

Sarah B. Rogers, who has publicly represented the US State Department’s hostility to European liberal democracies, was criticized by lawmakers for echoing far-right memes and conspiracy theories in her speech to the International Conference on the Right in London. She also cited the death of British teenager Henry Nowak and the recent incident in which a child was thrown into a crocodile den at a zoo.

Rogers, who has publicly attacked hate speech and immigration policies of U.S. allies and promoted far-right political parties abroad, made the concept of “Da Yukay,” a viral meme closely associated with the online far-right, central to his speech.

Speaking at the Coalition for Responsible Citizenship (ARC), where Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch spoke this week, Rogers listed examples from the UK that people had seen online. “In ‘Dayukei,’ if you posted an incendiary tweet, you could be detained without bail, and a psychopath who captured a three-year-old child and fed it to crocodiles would go free.

“The moral sense of the jury will not save you because jury trials for verbal offenses are abolished in ‘Tayukei.’ In ‘Tayukei,’ a girl escapes from a rapist and reports a police constable, only to discover that the police are in league with the rapist.

“In ‘Da UK’ you can get a free car if you pretend to be disabled. In ‘Da UK’ the police leave the victim in the hands of a murderer they call a racist. They then handcuff you in a way that, if you’re white, will make you bleed to death.”

Rogers said he wasn’t there to tell the audience, “It’s all misinformation, like your minders.”

Rogers is the Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy, a U.S. State Department role created in 1999 to strengthen relationships between the United States and citizens of other countries.

Her intervention at the ARC marks the most explicit criticism of the British government by an American official on British soil. She also claimed that “some people look at the thousands of speech arrests each year in the UK and see nothing but tyranny.”

“Our world-renowned justice system operates without fear or favor to protect all our citizens and we completely reject this characterization,” a British government spokesman said on Friday.

Liberal Democrat home spokesman Max Wilkinson said repeated attempts by Trump officials to undermine Britain’s democracy and judicial system were out of hand and ministers should engage with their American counterparts. He added: “It reflects the bizarre online conspiracy theories about the UK, which is what you would expect from a hostile country and not a NATO ally.”

Labor MP Stella Creasy also hit back, citing gun violence and child deportations in the US, saying figures like Rogers should “spend less time reading conspiracy theories about the UK on Twitter and more time solving their own problems”.

Keir Starmer suggested the US was trying to interfere with British democracy this month after US Vice President JD Vance blamed Nowak’s murder on mass immigration.

More than 4,000 delegates from 85 countries attended the three-day conference, which emerged as a force shaping right-wing policy both in the UK and abroad. The group is led by influential Conservative peer Philippa Stroud, a former adviser to Iain Duncan Smith and, along with him, one of the architects of the universal credit reform for welfare.

ARC’s advisory board includes Reform MP Danny Kruger and Cambridge theologian James Orr, a senior adviser to Nigel Farage. Other topics promoted by ARC include a call to action to address ‘depopulation’ in the West and encourage people to have more children.

Kruger told delegates in his keynote address that Britain’s cultural and political crisis is a fight to preserve what he calls “the British settlement” – a civilizational heritage rooted in the Bible, national sovereignty and the rule of law.

Appearing the day after Tory leader Beydenochk, Farage made his support explicit at a gathering in west London, likening the “breakdown of the family” to the “breakdown of communities” as the population becomes more diverse.

Attendees last week included representatives of European far-right groups including Alternative für Deutschland, Belgium’s Vlaams Belang, Spain’s Vox and the Netherlands’ Freedom Party.

Also appearing on stage as an official participant at one of the events was Carl Benjamin, a provocative British right-wing political commentator known online by the pseudonym Sargon of Akkad who speculated about whether he would rape Labor MP Jess Phillips.
