A strong M6.0 earthquake hits the Solomon Islands

A strong earthquake recorded by the USGS as a M6.0 struck southeast of Lata, Solomon Islands, at 23:28 UTC on 25 October 2025. The agency reported a depth of 54.4 km (33.8 miles). EMSC reported M6.0 at a depth of 65 km (40.4 miles). There is no threat of a tsunami from this earthquake.

The epicenter was located 199 kilometers (123 mi) southeast of Lata (population 553), and 355 kilometers (221 mi) northwest of Luganville (population 13,397), Solomon Islands.

It is estimated that 26,000 people felt weak tremors, and 4,000 were mild tremors.

There is no threat of a tsunami from this earthquake.

The US Geological Survey issued a green alert for shaking-related deaths and economic losses. There is a low possibility of casualties and damage.

In general, the population in this area resides in structures that are highly vulnerable to earthquakes, although some resistant structures exist. The predominant weak building types are variegated and wooden construction. Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides that may have contributed to the losses.

Liquefaction caused by this earthquake is considered unlikely. No major landslides are expected.
