Mid-morning earthquake between Seward and Homer

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake was reported south of Seward (Figure 1) at approximately 9:30 a.m. on October 30, 2025, felt about 100 miles (165 km) around the epicenter. It is worth noting that the closest Alaska Earthquake Center seismic stations to the event are located at Bradley Lake Dam (Figures 2, 3, 4). These plants were installed beginning in 2008, in partnership with the Alaska Power Authority.

Earthquakes of magnitude 5 and above are not unusual on the Kenai Peninsula, which has seen nearly 400 of them in the past 40 years (Figure 5). More than 2,000 people filled out the “Did You Feel It?” form. They can be viewed on a USGS map interface, and conversation about individual experiments takes place throughout the day via the Alaska Earthquake Center's social media threads. Most reported that they believed the shaking lasted 10 to 30 seconds, which was verified by shaking recorded by surrounding seismic sites (Figure 6). How a person experiences vibration depends on many of the factors we previously described here.

Lots of little surprises

Some residents were surprised by what they felt. One person in Kasilof reported that the shaking “seemed rather long.” It was also unusual for their location – “The place where our house is located seems to be protected from feeling strong earthquakes like other people in the area. We definitely felt this one. It started with a slow shake, then a big shake, followed by a few smaller ones, and then a gentle rolling/swaying.”

Casey Aderhold, a Homer resident, project manager for the EarthScope Consortium, and a seismologist, wasn't sure at first what was happening. “It felt a little jostling, but we've had storms recently, so it wasn't unusual. Then things continued and I realized it wasn't a storm. After a few seconds, I thought it might be the start of something bigger.”

Being well-versed in precautionary steps during an earthquake, Aderhold grabbed the cat that was sitting on her lap, then “I slid from my chair to the floor and covered my head and neck under the desk where I was working.” After the shaking stopped, she looked around to see if her Halloween decorations were still in place (they were), made a mental note to move the house plants off the shelf above her bed, and called some family and friends. Her sister, who was also in Homer, had some plates fall.

Large earthquakes in other parts of the world have sometimes caused catastrophic dam failures. Having seismic stations nearby to monitor shaking is a good safety precaution – the Seismic Center maintains four seismic stations at Bradley Lake Dam. Coincidentally, our field team had completed its annual inspection of the stations a few days before the earthquake. Their instrumentation upgrades have helped ensure high-quality data is available to assess the strength and style of shaking, information that helps dam engineers know what emergency response may be needed immediately.

Warnings can help, even in moderate events

Such tremors, which rattle the nerves but cause little damage, are a useful reminder that southern Alaska is vulnerable to potentially large and devastating earthquakes. Phyllis Snow of Soldotna checked on her husband after the shaking stopped. “He was in our shop rotating tires.” The Alaska Earthquake Center is working to bring earthquake early warning to the state, a system that can generate widespread alerts seconds to minutes before potentially harmful tremors.

While Android phones have been ready over the past year to act as earthquake sensors once waves reach people, the 5.4-magnitude Seward earthquake is the first we've heard from anyone in Alaska calling for such an alert. One resident described in his book “Did You Feel It?” Report, “We heard the alert go off, and just as I was getting up enough to find my phone, the earthquake came to us. We were confused, because we were in the RV, and it vibrates when the dog runs through it. The alert just said something about an earthquake 44 miles away and we might feel it. It helped solidify that it was an earthquake we were feeling, and not something trying to raid the pantry from outside the camper.”

Knowing whether the shaking will continue and worsen is the main reason why early warnings are important. The Alaska Earthquake Center continues to advocate for maintaining a robust seismic network for rapid detection of earthquakes in Alaska, and implementing an early warning system so residents can know when they need to take preventative measures.
