The largest south central earthquake since 2023 hits southwest Seward

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck 43 miles southwest of Seward Thursday morning.

The quake occurred around 9:33 a.m., according to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Earthquake Center. It was felt throughout the Kenai Peninsula and south-central region.

This is the largest earthquake in Southcentral since March 2023.

Critics say the quake could be felt at the Seward Fire Station

Seward Fire Chief Clinton Crites says this was probably the closest earthquake Seward has felt in about eight years, and it could be felt even at the fire department.

“The building shook. Then, about 30 or 45 seconds later, we got a second point, but it only lasted about 15 or 20 seconds. I felt a little stronger,” Crites said. “[It] It was kind of rocking us in our seats, and a couple of our employees were getting in between the door jambs, you know, but it only lasted about 15 seconds.

Fortunately, the fire department has not received any reports of damage or injuries, Crites said. In the wake of the earthquake, Crites advises communities in tsunami warning areas to take any warning seriously.
