Small earthquake recorded at Talladega; First Alabama in 2025

Much of the state woke up on Halloween morning to the surprise of seeing frost on the ground for the first time in months.

But for some people at Talladega, the biggest surprise was a wake-up call.

While the quake was likely too small to be felt by most people in the area, the event still registered as a magnitude of 2.3 on the USGS scale at 4:48 a.m. No damages or injuries were reported.

Talladega earthquake

The US Geological Survey located the quake in an empty area near the intersection of East McMillan Street and Johnson Street between downtown Talladega and the Talladega National Forest.

According to the US Geological Survey, the depth of the quake was 9.6 kilometers, or 5.96 miles.

This was the southernmost earthquake recorded in Alabama since November 2022 (Hollins). 11 of the 16 earthquakes recorded in Alabama since 2020 were north of Birmingham.

This was the first recorded earthquake in Alabama in nearly a year, and the last earthquake in Sibsey was on November 18, 2024.

A total of four earthquakes were recorded in Alabama in 2024.

The strongest earthquake in Alabama's history occurred in 1916 when a 5.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Vandiver, according to the US Geological Survey.

However, in recent history, Fort Payne experienced a major earthquake when a 4.9 magnitude earthquake caused damage in several areas.

The USGS says there are four areas of frequent earthquake activity affecting Alabama including:

New Madrid Seismic Zone Southern Appalachia Seismic Zone South Carolina Seismic Zone Bahamas Seismic Zone Fracture Seismic Zone

Although we may not have many major earthquakes in Alabama, this is why a few small earthquakes are recorded each year, especially in areas near the Appalachian Mountains.

“Most of the earthquakes we see in Alabama are associated with the Southern Appalachian Seismic Zone (an extension of the East Tennessee Seismic Zone) which runs along the Appalachian Mountains from the northeastern corner to the central part of the state and the Bahamas Seismic Fault Zone in southern Alabama.”
