Fears of casualties after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan

An earthquake struck northern Afghanistan near Mazar-i-Sharif, one of the country's largest cities, at around 20:30 GMT (01:00 local time).

The earthquake reached a magnitude of 6.3 and a depth of 28 kilometers, according to the US Geological Survey.

The agency also warned of “significant losses” and a “potentially large-scale” disaster.

A Taliban spokesman in Balkh province, of which Mazar-i-Sharif is the capital, wrote on the X website that four people were killed and “several people were injured” in the Sholgara district. The BBC was unable to independently verify this figure.

Hajj Zaid wrote in a previous post that they had received “reports of minor injuries and superficial damage from all areas of the governorate.”

“Most injuries are caused by people falling from tall buildings,” he wrote.

More than 500,000 people live in Mazar-i-Sharif. Agence France-Presse reported that many city residents rushed to the streets when the earthquake occurred, fearing that their homes would collapse.

The Taliban spokesman in Balkh also posted a video on the X website showing debris scattered on the ground at the Blue Mosque, a local landmark in Mazar-i-Sharif.

The religious complex is believed to house the tomb of the first Shiite Imam, a religious leader believed to hold divine knowledge. It is now a site where pilgrims gather to pray and celebrate religious occasions.

Khaled Zadran, a Taliban police spokesman in Kabul, wrote on X that police teams are “closely monitoring the situation.”

Monday's quake comes after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan's mountainous eastern region in late August, killing more than 1,000 people.

This earthquake was particularly deadly because rural homes in the area were usually made of mud and wood. Residents were trapped when their homes collapsed during the earthquake.
