A 6.3 magnitude earthquake strikes northern Afghanistan

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake occurred near the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif early Monday, killing at least seven people and injuring about 150 others, regional authorities said Monday.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 28 kilometers near Mazar-i-Sharif, which has a population of about 523,000 people.

“A total of 150 people have been reported injured and seven martyred and transferred to health centers as of this morning,” said Samim Joyanda, spokesman for the health department in Samangan, a northern mountainous province near Mazar-i-Sharif.

He added that this tally was based on hospital reports collected as of Monday morning.

The US Geological Survey issued an orange alert in its PAGER system, an automated system that produces information about the impact of earthquakes, and noted that “significant casualties are likely and the disaster is likely to be widespread.”

The system alert added that previous events with this level of alert required a response at the regional or national level.

Haj Zaid, spokesman for Balkh province, said that the earthquake destroyed part of the holy shrine of Mazar-i-Sharif, referring to the Blue Mosque.

The country's National Disaster Management Agency said reports on casualties and damage would be published later. Reuters was not immediately able to verify the extent of the damage caused by the earthquake.

Videos of rescue efforts being carried out to rescue people trapped under the rubble and images of debris falling into buildings were shared on the social media platform X. One video showed rescuers pulling what appeared to be bodies from the rubble.

The Taliban administration said thousands were killed and thousands more injured after an earthquake and a series of aftershocks struck Afghanistan in August.

Afghanistan is particularly vulnerable to earthquakes as the country sits on two major active faults that can rupture and cause widespread damage.

In 2015, an earthquake struck northeastern Afghanistan, killing several hundred people in Afghanistan and neighboring northern Pakistan. Another in 2023 killed at least 1,000 people.
