6.3 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan kills at least 20 people and injures 320; Tremors captured on camera

At least 20 people were killed after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan on Monday morning. Reuters added, citing a statement issued by the Taliban-run Ministry of Health, that about 320 people were injured as a result of the strong tremors that struck the city of Mazar-i-Sharif.

However, the death toll is expected to rise as rescue efforts continue in one of Afghanistan's largest cities.

20 dead and more than 300 wounded

According to the Taliban Ministry of Health, at least 20 people were confirmed dead due to the earthquake that occurred on Monday morning. Moreover, 320 people were injured.

According to reports, Balkh Province and neighboring Samangan Province recorded the greatest amount of damage.

Monday's earthquake comes months after an earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale killed at least 2,200 people and injured more.

While initial reports indicated that the earthquake measured 6.2 on the Richter scale, the US Geological Survey said it measured 6.3. Furthermore, the tremors prompted the USGS to issue an orange alert in its PAGER system, indicating “the potential for significant casualties and the potential for a widespread disaster.”

The Blue Mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif, a 15th-century landmark famous for its vibrant tiles, was also damaged by the 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck northern Afghanistan overnight.

According to Agence France-Presse, pieces of the ornate structure, especially one of its minarets, were broken and scattered throughout the mosque grounds.

The mosque, the shrine of Imam Ali, is one of the few tourist sites in the landlocked country.

As social media is filled with images of devastation in Afghanistan, CCTV footage from a house in Mazar-i-Sharif has gone viral to capture the moment the earthquake struck the Afghan city.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake occurred at a depth of 28 kilometers (17.4 miles) near Mazar-i-Sharif, which has a population of about 523,000.

As rescue efforts continue, Reuters reported that the country's National Disaster Management Agency said details regarding casualties and damage would be shared at a later date.

Other videos on social media show rescue efforts underway in the area to rescue those trapped under rubble and falling debris.

Earlier in August, the Taliban administration in Afghanistan reported that at least 2,200 people were killed by the 6.0-magnitude earthquake.
