Social media users took to X, claiming that they felt an earthquake in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh, during the early hours of Tuesday. Some described the tremors as short but strong, lasting for a few seconds.

Independent tracking website Volcano Discovery reported an “earthquake-like event, possible earthquake” around 10.49pm GMT (4.19am EDT) in Vizag.

But the tracking site said: “There are no details yet about the size or depth of this potential earthquake.”

Despite user reports and independent reports of possible seismic activity, there has been no confirmation yet from the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

The latest update from NCS was regarding the earthquake that struck Russia's Kamchatka region on Monday.

In related news, a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan early Monday, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 640 others, while also causing damage to the historic Blue Mosque, officials said. The authorities warned of the possibility of an increase in the number of deaths and injuries.

The US Geological Survey said the epicenter of the quake was 22 kilometers (14 miles) west-southwest of Kholm and occurred at 12:59 a.m., at a depth of 28 kilometers (17 miles).

In Kholm, near the epicenter, residents sifted through the rubble of collapsed mud-brick homes using shovels and their hands to recover their belongings. A local resident, Ahmed Zia, described the dust-filled air emanating from the destroyed homes.

Footage posted on social media from Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of northern Balkh province, showed some bricks falling from the walls of the Blue Mosque, but the structure itself remained standing. The centuries-old mosque, a major religious and cultural site, hosts large gatherings during Islamic and cultural festivals.

The report said that Afghanistan, a country with limited resources, often struggles to respond to natural disasters, especially in remote areas. Many buildings are low-rise concrete or brick structures, while rural houses are often made of mud brick and poorly constructed wood, making them highly vulnerable to earthquakes.

Qari Taj Muhammad Hemmat, deputy spokesman for Afghanistan's National Disaster Management Authority, said the earthquake hit Balkh, Samangan, Sar-i-Pul and Kunduz provinces, killing 20 people and injuring 643 others, 25 of whom were in critical condition.

Sharafat Zaman, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Health, said that the deceased and more than 500 wounded were transferred to hospitals in Balkh and Samangan provinces. He added that rescuers are still at the site and that the numbers continue to change.
