Did Vizag just experience an earthquake? Citizens report tremors overnight

Social media users in Vizag reported feeling the tremors, late Monday night. Several people took to X (formerly Twitter), describing what they felt as a short but powerful jolt that lasted only a few seconds.

The tremor was felt for a few seconds in several areas, including Gajuwaka, Madhurawada, Rushikonda, Bhimunnipatnam, Kailasapuram, Maharani Petta, Visalakshinagar and Akayapalem, NDTV reported.

Residents reported that voices were also heard in some places.

Independent tracking website Volcano Discovery also flagged an “earthquake-like event, possible earthquake” around 11pm GMT (4:30am EDT) in Vizag. But she noted, “There are no details yet about the size or depth of this potential earthquake.”

Despite user accounts and an independent alert, there has been no official confirmation from the National Seismological Center. Instead, the agency's latest update was on the earthquake reported in Russia's Kamchatka region on Monday.
