A strong earthquake hits the Gulf of California in Mexico today

The US Geological Survey said that a 5.7-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Gulf of California, Mexico, early Friday morning.

The earthquake had a depth of 6.2 miles, and its epicenter was 46.6 miles northeast of Santa Rosalia, Mexico.

The US Geological Survey said there is a green alert for deaths and economic losses associated with the tremors, meaning there is a “low potential for casualties and damage.”

Mexico is “one of the most seismically active regions in the world,” says the USGS, because it sits atop three large tectonic plates.

“The area west of the Gulf of California, including Mexico's Baja California Peninsula, is moving northwestward with the Pacific plate at about 50 mm per year,” the USGS says.

“Here, the Pacific and North American plates collide with each other creating a strike-slip fault, which is the southern extension of the San Andreas Fault in California.

“In the past, relative plate motion pulled Baja California away from the coast that forms the Gulf of California, and is the cause of earthquakes in the Gulf of California today.”

Recent earthquakes

The US Geological Survey said that the Indonesian coast was hit by four earthquakes on November 4 and 5. The magnitude of the earthquakes ranged between 4.7 and 5.9, which is considered a strong earthquake capable of causing major damage.

The 5.9-magnitude quake struck late Tuesday about 40 miles, or 65 kilometers, from Gorontalo and at a depth of about 70 miles, or about 110 kilometers, according to a USGS map.

Just two hours ago, another earthquake measuring 5.0 occurred in Papua Province, Indonesia, about 110 miles (178 km) west-northwest of Apipora.

On Wednesday, two more earthquakes hit the coast, with a magnitude of 4.7.

No injuries or damage were reported, and no tsunami warnings were issued.

From Sunday to Monday, nearly two dozen earthquakes struck off the coast of Russia, near the Kamchatka Peninsula, according to the US Geological Survey.

The strength of the tremors ranged from 4.3 to 6.1 magnitude. No injuries, deaths or destruction were reported, and no tsunami warning was issued.

The region has witnessed frequent seismic activity over the past few months, with a strong 8.8-magnitude earthquake occurring on July 29, which led to tsunami warnings being issued along the west coast of the United States.

On Sunday, a strong earthquake struck northern Afghanistan with a magnitude of 6.3. The quake occurred about 13 miles west-southwest of Kholm, which is located about 230 miles northwest of the capital, Kabul.

At least 20 people were killed when homes were reduced to rubble.
