A minor earthquake shook Kotka, southeastern Finland, around 11pm on Friday.

According to the Seismological Institute of the University of Helsinki, the magnitude of the earthquake was 1.2.

“This is a small earthquake. Such events are not unusual in Kemenlaakso, because the ground is a little different from elsewhere,” Suvi Heinonen, director of the institute, told Yle.

According to Heinonen, the institute immediately received about 15 reports about the incident from the public through its website.

“I wondered what exploded.”

Kai Savolainen, who lives in an apartment building in the Sapoka neighborhood of Kotka, was startled by a loud bang that shook the building's structures.

“I wondered what exploded. I went to the balcony to look, but I didn't hear any emergency vehicles,” Savolainen said Saturday morning.

Residents in other parts of the city described similar experiences in social media posts.

According to Heinonen, smaller aftershocks are possible.

Earthquakes occur relatively frequently in the Kemenlakso region, which also includes the cities of Kouvula and Hamina. For example, in December 2022, a 1.8 magnitude earthquake was felt in Kotka and Pehta.
