A strong earthquake hits the coast of Japan, and the tsunami warning was lifted after 3 hours

Tokyo (AFP) – A strong earthquake shook northern Japan on Sunday evening, followed by several other tremors, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. A tsunami warning has been issued.

The quake, with a magnitude of 6.9 and a depth of 16 kilometers (10 miles), struck off the coast of Iwate Prefecture at 5:03 p.m. Japan time.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, or any reports of malfunctions at the two nuclear power plants in the area.

The agency issued a tsunami warning of up to 1 meter (3 feet) high along the northern coastal region, and later said that waters could reach 3 meters high in some areas.

A tsunami of about 10 centimeters (4 in) was detected in Ofunato City in Iwate Prefecture, Uminato Port, Miyako, and Kamishi, and later reached 20 centimeters (8 in) in the Koji coastal area. The ensuing tsunami in Ofunato reached a height of 20 cm (8 inches), according to the agency.

Tsunamis that follow earthquakes can continue for a few hours afterward, hitting the coast repeatedly, perhaps increasing in size over time.

While the warning was issued, people were warned to stay away from the ocean and coastal areas, and were told that more shaking could follow in the area.

The tsunami warning was lifted about three hours after the first quake, but the meteorological agency told reporters that the area was at risk of strong earthquakes for about a week, especially over the next two or three days.

More earthquakes were recorded in Iwate Prefecture, and a series of earthquakes also shook the main northernmost island of Hokkaido.

Northeastern Japan is prone to earthquakes, including the triple disaster of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown in Fukushima, south of Iwate, in March 2011, which killed nearly 20,000 people, mostly due to the tsunami, and caused severe damage to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
