A swarm of earthquakes hits the San Francisco Bay Area with successive tremors

An earthquake swarm hit the San Francisco Bay Area Sunday morning.

The group of up to eight earthquakes, ranging in magnitude from 2.5 to 3.8 on the Richter scale, first occurred from 9:38 a.m. to 9:41 a.m. around southeast San Ramon.

The latest quake struck at 10:42 a.m., less than a mile west of San Ramon.

Residents of Emeryville, Dublin and San Ramon reported feeling the tremors.

“Felt much stronger than 3.7! I was guessing at least 5. Strong jolt and rumble,” said one X user, claiming to be from San Ramon.

Earthquakes larger than magnitude 2.5 can usually be felt, but usually cause only minor damage to buildings, according to the Michigan Tech University Seismic Magnitude Scale.

No damage was reported.

The earthquake swarm struck about 25 to 30 miles east of San Francisco.

The smaller quake was centered south of Paterson, 50 miles away from the rest of the group.

Southern California is vulnerable to seismic activity due to the San Andreas Fault, the boundary between two shifting tectonic plates that often generates earthquakes.

In August, there was a swarm of 100 earthquakes about 90 miles north of San Francisco, the strongest measuring 4.0. No damage was reported.

A major earthquake is expected to hit California before 2032, according to modeling by the U.S. Geological Survey.
