University of Arkansas pioneers steel beam earthquake testing

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (KATV) – The University of Arkansas College of Engineering recently demonstrated pioneering large-scale testing of steel beams designed to withstand simulated earthquake forces.

Micah Hill, head of the Department of Civil Engineering, explained the importance of the test, which involves a unique connection between column and beam at an oblique angle, as opposed to typical right-angled connections.

“Right now, building codes don't allow for that much deviation,” Hill said.

“So this is one of the first tests to specifically test this connection to the subject, using a seismic protocol, so that the structure is loaded to simulate an earthquake. So, we hope that the result of the test will allow this angle to be used and will change building codes.”

The research aims to influence building codes across the country, making steel structures more efficient and safer during earthquakes.

Hill credited the university's advanced facilities and esteemed faculty, including Dr. Gary Prince and Dr. Morgan Broberg, for putting Arkansas at the forefront of this research.

Although Arkansas is not a high-risk earthquake zone, the results are expected to impact steel construction across the country.

“There's not much danger in Arkansas. Many years ago, the New Madrid Fault, where the earthquake happened in eastern Arkansas, is where they say the Mississippi River flowed backwards for a while, but I don't see any imminent danger. But the research we're doing at the University of Arkansas isn't limited to just the state of Arkansas. I mean all the steel structures that are being built nationwide. The results of our research will impact how steel structures are built. Nationwide.”

Hill talked about why this research is important not only to Arkansas, but to the country as a whole.

“This innovation will help steel structures. It will make them more efficient. It will open up different types of designs. It will make structures safer during earthquakes. We hope it will save lives.”
