Another earthquake hits Paphos at a time when Cyprus is witnessing unusual seismic activity

Cyprus was hit by another earthquake on Thursday morning, adding to a series of earthquakes that began yesterday, with unusual seismic activity continuing in the Paphos area.

At 11:30 a.m., a 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck the area, following a previous 3.9-magnitude quake at 6:46 a.m. The sequence follows two stronger earthquakes on Wednesday: a 5.3-magnitude quake at 11:31 a.m. and a 5.2-magnitude quake at 4:23 p.m., both centered near Agia Marina Kilokedara, about 20 kilometers northeast of Paphos. The earthquake was felt all over Cyprus, including Limassol and Nicosia, and even along parts of the eastern Mediterranean coast.

Director of the Geological Survey Department, Christodoulos Hadgiorgiou, described the activity as an “intense and unprecedented seismic sequence,” comparing it to the successive earthquakes that Turkey witnessed in 2023. He said that light tremors continued on Wednesday evening, followed by the two new earthquakes on Thursday morning.

More than 15 earthquakes were recorded during the past hours, many of which were felt by residents. Authorities say the situation is expected to calm down, but they urge the public to remain calm and vigilant.

Damage so far has been minimal. The head of Paphos Civil Defense, Charalambos Petokopitis, reported only one incident: the roof of an unoccupied house in Kilokedara collapsed during the earthquake on Wednesday afternoon. No other structural damage was reported. Local engineers have been instructed to provide technical support if necessary.

The Geological Survey continues to monitor the area closely, and emergency services remain on alert for both seismic activity and severe weather affecting the Paphos coast.
