'It felt like an earthquake': the explosion that tore apart Nogam's sleep

SRINAGAR – The horrific aftermath of Friday night's powerful explosion inside Nowgam police station unfolded Saturday morning, as investigators combed through mangled wreckage, burned vehicles and twisted metal in what officials described as one of the deadliest accidental explosions in recent years.

The explosion, which occurred as a result of an “accidental detonation” of seized explosives, killed nine people and injured at least 29 others. By dawn, the area resembled a disaster zone, with roofs collapsed, walls cracked, and charred remains scattered throughout the compound.

Videos showed scenes of devastation: shattered windows, smashed doors, and burned police vehicles reduced to mangled tires. Piles of concrete, twisted tin sheets and burned documents were scattered throughout the building, while personal belongings – tattered shoes and half-burnt uniforms – told their own story of terror and loss.

Local residents said the blast wave was so intense that it shattered windows hundreds of meters away. The debris fell near Nogam Bridge, about half a kilometer from the police station. One resident said: “We saw pieces of metal and signs of blood even on the walls of the bridge.” “The sound was deafening. For a moment, we thought it was an earthquake.”

By Saturday morning, all lanes leading to the police station were closed, and security personnel set up barricades and restricted entry. Only forensic experts and senior officers were allowed in as the search for evidence and remaining traces of explosives continued.

“The entire area is undergoing technical inspection,” said an officer monitoring the cordoned off area. “Entry is still restricted for safety reasons.”

Among the wreckage, investigators found several destroyed vehicles, including motorcycles and cars. A water tank inside the complex exploded under pressure, submerging parts of the site. The boundary wall was blown away, exposing neighboring houses that also bore the brunt of the blast, with their windows shattered, curtains torn and roofs cracked.

Residents across Nowgam, Natipora, Barzola and nearby localities reported hearing the explosion around 11:20 p.m. Another resident said: “It felt as if the ground had risen.” “Everything shook, and the sound echoed for several seconds.”

By morning, senior officials, including DGP J&K Nalin Prabhat, IGP Kashmir VK Birdi and IGP CRPF Pawan Kumar, visited the site to assess the damage and supervise the ongoing investigation. Orders were issued to conduct a detailed investigation into the cause of the bombing and to deal with the seized explosive materials.
