EARTHQUAKE TODAY: A 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck California on Tuesday with tremors in Paso Robles, Atascadero and Templeton, a census-designated place in San Luis Obispo County.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 4.1 magnitude earthquake at 9:45 a.m. PT (12:54 p.m. ET), with its epicenter near Templeton.

The quake occurred 23 miles from San Luis Obispo and eight miles from Atascadero.

More than 700 Templeton residents reported feeling shivering, according to the “Did You Feel It” page on the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) website.

“California just welcomed me back. First earthquake since I got back. It was minor but I forgot how terrible it was!! Apparently it was a 4.4 magnitude. Felt like a train running through the house,” one X user said.

Last week, the region witnessed two earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 2.5.

Five days ago, a 3.5 magnitude earthquake was detected near Vallejo. Whereas, on November 17, a 3.3 magnitude earthquake struck near San Ramon.

California lies along the San Andreas Fault System, a major fault line that has caused some of the largest earthquakes in U.S. history.

According to earthquake website Country.com, the Southern California coast region is highly vulnerable to earthquakes and earthquake-related impacts. Numerous seismic faults crisscross Southern California and none within the region reside more than 10 miles from an active fault.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service in Los Angeles said scattered showers are currently circling the area. “Chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms during the day in Southern California. Possible of brief moderate/heavy rain with any thunderstorms,”

The National Weather Prediction Center (NWPC) said the risk of flash flooding is increasing this afternoon and into the evening across the Colorado River Basin between southeastern California, southern Nevada and western Arizona.

“Heavy rain is likely during sunset leading to potential flash flooding concerns overnight.”
