A 3.2 magnitude earthquake hits the San Ramon area

SAN RAMON, Calif. – A 3.2 magnitude earthquake struck near San Ramon Thursday morning.

The quake occurred just after 7:30 a.m., according to the USGS.

The San Ramon Valley area has recorded 83 earthquakes since Nov. 9 within a one-mile radius.

According to the USGS, the earthquakes ranged in magnitude from 0.6 to 3.8 magnitude, and most were too small to be felt.

Scientists say this pattern is a classic seismic swarm, that is, a wave of many small earthquakes over a short period, rather than a single large earthquake with aftershocks.

It is centered in the Calaveras Fault Zone

Preliminary analysis indicates that the activity is occurring along the Calaveras Fault, one of the most active branches of the larger San Andreas Fault System.

This section passes directly through the East Bay, below San Ramon, Danville, Dublin, and Pleasanton.

The earthquakes recorded so far appear to be strike-slip events, meaning the two sides of the fault slide horizontally past each other. USGS data shows that earthquakes occur at depths of approximately 3 to 6 miles below the surface.

One of the largest earthquakes — a magnitude 3.8, struck at a depth of about 5.7 miles. These depths place the activity in the upper crust, and are shallow enough that residents can feel the shaking, but still within the normal depth range of the Calaveras Fault.

Scientists say nothing about the depth or pattern that suggests a larger earthquake is imminent.

Experts say the swarms are typical of this fault system, which tends to release stress through small, frequent adjustments deep within the Earth.
