Las Vegas residents share eyewitness stories from the Venezuela earthquake

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) – Las Vegas locals are sharing their accounts of the aftermath of the Venezuela earthquake as the death toll rises and relief efforts pour in from around the world.

Jason Wang had barely been in Caracas for 24 hours when he found himself in the middle of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake.

“I was actually next in line to get into the cable car, so I was recording with my phone about to get in. Then all of a sudden, the building and the floors started shaking, and then we all panicked and ran toward the exit. Then it went on for about a minute,” Wang told FOX5. Cell phone video shows people running into the open for safety.

Wang walked through six miles of devastation to return to his hotel.

“A lot of the roads that were going down, they’re no longer there. They’ve been completely destroyed. There were landslides that covered a lot of parts of the road and a lot of fallen trees that built up this huge wall barrier across many different parts of the road. Little by little, we had to figure out a way to get around these obstacles,” Wang said, using Starlink to speak to FOX5.

Bryce Henderson and his wife bought an apartment just outside of Caracas for his wife’s family to use on weekends. The earthquake destroyed it and made it uninhabitable.

Las Vegas locals share what they saw after Venezuela’s powerful earthquake, with one visitor describing a minute of intense shaking, miles of destroyed roads and landslides, and intermittent cell service as relief operations ramp up.

With no or intermittent cell service and impassable roads, relatives had to wait hours or walk miles to find their loved ones.

[My wife] She was trying to track down all of her family members, and it reminded me of 9/11 when people were looking for their family members in New York City. We started seeing all the videos of buildings collapsing. I had never thought about our apartment we bought there, that was not even a thought that had crossed my mind. “But then my wife told me that that area was actually the hardest hit area,” Henderson said. She was eventually able to locate her uncle, although he had to go to the hospital after being hit by falling debris.

Henderson hopes that Americans will remain aware of the situation abroad and intervene to help; Restoring the country will take years.

“I feel for all the people in Venezuela who have already been through so much with their economy,” he said. “The average person there earns $250 a month, and yet their food costs the same as ours.”

The Red Cross and UNICEF USA are among the international non-profit organizations assisting with rescue and resource efforts, and accepting donations where possible.

Radio Latina of Las Vegas works with local restaurants like Viva Las Arepas and Rika Arepa to help carry items like medications, baby formula, bottled water, hygiene products, and more.
