Earthquake in Kolkata? Social media is abuzz with videos – the tremors, which lasted just a few seconds, 'were very strong'

Kolkata Earthquake Today: Several social media users on Friday said they felt an earthquake in Kolkata, West Bengal, for “a few seconds” and said it was a “strong” earthquake. Minutes later, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake was confirmed to have struck Narsingdi in Bangladesh at around 10.08 am on Friday, triggering tremors across West Bengal.

“This earthquake lasted over 30 seconds and was very strong,” one user posted on X.

Internet users were quick to share videos filmed in their homes during the earthquake. One showed a shaking chandelier and wall hangings, while another showed shaking water bottles.

One person said: “This is the scariest earthquake I have ever felt, the whole building literally shook.” Many also said they felt the tremors “at 10:10 a.m.”

Many videos also showed people taking to the streets of Kolkata and other areas. According to a social media user, people in the IT sector in Kolkata's Salt Lake City evacuated their offices after strong tremors were felt in parts of West Bengal.

People felt tremors in several places in south Bengal, including Kolkata, on Friday morning, as a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck Narsindi district in Bangladesh, news agency PTI quoted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) as saying.

The International Meteorological Institute said, “The earthquake occurred 13 kilometers southwest of Narsingdi in the neighboring country at 10.08 a.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers.”

Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 5.5 magnitude earthquake near Narsingdi, Bangladesh, at 10:08:26 (UTC+05:30) today.

The US Geological Survey said the epicenter of the quake was located in the city of Narsindi, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the capital, Dhaka.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Reuters witnesses said that terrified residents rushed out of their homes in Dhaka while buildings shook and some temporary structures collapsed. “I felt the ground shaking for a few seconds,” one X user said.

Last month, in October, a 3.4-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported.

Shallow earthquakes like these tend to cause stronger shaking because seismic waves travel a shorter distance to the surface. According to global seismic data, an earthquake occurs somewhere in the world approximately every 30 seconds, although most are too weak to be detected.
