Donald Trump and Tehran send mixed signals on Iran negotiations

“Talks continue at a rapid pace with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Trump said in a Truth Social article.

In telephone interviews with media outlets after the article, Trump said he had not been told that Iran was suspending negotiations with Washington.

“They didn’t inform us,” Trump said in an interview with NBC News.

Trump said silence between the two sides would be acceptable and that he was willing to wait.

“I think we’ve talked too much if you want to know the truth. I think staying silent would be very good, and it could last a long time,” he told NBC.

A suspension of negotiations would not mean the United States would start bombing Iran, Trump told the outlet, adding that the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports would remain in place.

In a separate interview with CNBC, Trump said he didn’t mind that the negotiations were over.

“I don’t care if they’re finished, honestly…I don’t care,” he said, as quoted by CNBC.

Shortly after these media interviews were published, Trump posted a message on social media saying that talks with Iran were continuing.

Iran also threatened to completely block the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the southern Red Sea, saying there would be no negotiations until its demands for a cessation of Israeli operations in Lebanon and Gaza were met.

“The immediate cessation of the Zionist regime’s aggressive and brutal military operations in Gaza and Lebanon and the need for the regime’s complete withdrawal from occupied areas in Lebanon have been emphasized by Iranian officials and negotiators, and there will be no talks until Iran and the resistance’s views on this issue are heard,” Tasnim added.

Earlier on Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced on X/Twitter that “the ceasefire between Iran and the United States is unequivocally a ceasefire on all fronts, including in Lebanon.”

“Its violation on one front is a violation of the ceasefire on all fronts,” he added. “The United States and Israel are responsible for the consequences of any violation.”
