A powerful earthquake has struck Bangladesh outside the crowded capital Dhaka, killing at least three people, according to health officials.

Dhaka-based DBC TV reported that the death toll rose to at least six people on Friday in the capital, three of them due to the collapse of a building roof and wall, and three passers-by when the building's barriers fell on them.

The US Geological Survey said the 5.5-magnitude earthquake occurred at 10:38 a.m. (04:38 GMT) near the city of Narsindi, about 33 kilometers (16 miles) from Dhaka.

The earthquake caused panic among the population, as many in the Muslim-majority country with a population of 170 million sat at home on their day off.

A Dhaka resident said: “I had never felt an earthquake like this before, and I had never felt it in my life. This was the first time. I was sleeping and suddenly, I felt the whole building shaking and then we all fell.”

“It was one of the largest earthquakes in recent history and it was very close to the capital. The whole city was in panic. Videos on social media showed buildings shaking,” Al Jazeera's Tanveer Chowdhury said from Dhaka.

AFP reporters in Dhaka saw people crying in the streets, while others appeared shocked.

The Ministry of Health said that three people were killed, including a medical student.

The US Geological Survey warned of the potential for “significant losses” and damage.

The tremor lasted for 26 seconds, and its epicenter was in the Madabdi area of ​​Narsingdi, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, which recorded a magnitude of 5.7.

Residents felt the tremors as far as the Indian city of Kolkata, more than 325 kilometers from the epicenter.

AFP reporters saw people fleeing their offices and homes after the sudden tremor.

Sumit Dutta (66 years old) said: “I felt tremors and my bed moved… and I quickly left my room.”
