A 5.7 magnitude earthquake kills 5 people and injures 100 in Bangladesh

An official statement said that a moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 shook Bangladesh today, Friday, killing at least five people, including three in the capital, Dhaka, and injuring about a hundred others.

At least five people, including a child, were killed, and about 100 people were injured in different parts of the country, including Dhaka University students and factory workers in the central Ghazipur and Narsingdi districts, which were the epicenter of the quake, according to a statement from the office of interim President Muhammad Yunus.

Local police officer Ashish Bose told Anadolu Agency that the fence of a five-storey building collapsed in Dhaka's Panjshal neighborhood, killing three people.

The tremor was recorded at 10.38 am local time (0438 GMT), and its epicenter was in the Narsindi district, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of Dhaka, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

The earthquake lasted only a few seconds. Residents in Dhaka rushed out of buildings and homes as the ground shook, seeking safety in the streets.

She added that the earthquake caused casualties in various regions of the country, including house collapses and other accidents.

Younis expressed his deep shock and sadness at this news.

He said the government was closely monitoring the situation and initiatives had been taken to collect a full account of the damage.

The local fire department reported seven cases of buildings damaged or affected by the earthquake inside and outside Dhaka, and at least one person was injured.

The earthquake was also felt in parts of neighboring India.
