The earthquake splits buildings and causes panic in Narsingdi

Dhaka, November 22, 2025 (BSS) – A strong earthquake struck Narsindi district and surrounding areas on Friday, causing widespread structural damage and sparking panic among residents.

Today, a BSS area correspondent visited several affected areas and saw cracks in dozens of buildings, roads and educational institutions in the area, the epicenter of the earthquake. Riverside communities and industrial workers also experienced intense fear.

Many buildings, schools, shops and roads were severely damaged. The quake, one of the strongest in modern history, has claimed at least ten lives and injured more than 500 people across the country so far.

A seven-member team from Dhaka University's Department of Geology visited various sites in Gorachal, including Gorachal Dairy Farm and Palash Model Residential College, to collect soil samples from fractured areas for detailed analysis.

On the ground, cracks have appeared on the main road in front of Palash Model Residential College, and in Lebupora, the soil has receded beneath a cattle farm, putting more than a hundred cows at risk.

Many multi-storey buildings developed cracks or partially collapsed.

Equipment was damaged at the Gorachal thermal power plant, and a small fire broke out.

Cracks were also reported in the old railway bridge over the Shitalakya River, as well as in the government food depot, deputy commissioner's office and hundreds of other buildings. Riverside residents were similarly concerned.

Rafiq Ahmed, 43, a resident of Palash, said: “During the earthquake, the river water rose in huge waves. We were terrified. Only after a while, we realized it was an earthquake. I have never experienced such a tremor in my life.”

Workers at the PRAN-RFL factory also panicked; A number of them were injured while escaping from the buildings.

Abdul Sattar (56 years old), a factory worker, said: “At first we thought a heavy truck was passing outside, then we saw the buildings shaking violently, so everyone got out, and some fainted from fear.”

“Suddenly, the ground and buildings started shaking with a loud noise,” said Fazlo Mia, a 54-year-old shop owner near the college. “The soil at the college gate moved, creating cracks. I have never seen anything like that before.”

The Earthquake Monitoring Center of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department confirmed that the city of Madabadhi in Narsindi was the epicenter of the earthquake. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), it is located about 14 kilometers west-southwest of Narsindhi Sadar, near Danga village in Palash upazila, near Gorachal Municipal District. As a result, people in these areas were among the worst affected.

Dr. Asim Obaidullah, former professor in the Department of Geology at DU, said that the soil samples collected will help determine the type and depth of the earthquake after analysis.

Meanwhile, the district administration is assessing the extent of damage across the district.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Abu Tahir Muhammad Shamsuzzaman said official damage estimates would be published within three to four days.

Palash Upazila Project Implementation Officer Kausar Alam Sarkar said damage assessments are ongoing in various unions and municipal areas.

He pointed out that initial reports indicate the presence of cracks in more than a hundred mud houses and more than fifty government and private buildings, and the numbers are expected to rise.

He added that the families of two people who died in Palash upazila each received Tk 25,000 as financial assistance and many other earthquake affected people were also helped under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief.
