World Cup qualifiers in Scotland win reactions equivalent to a small earthquake | Scotland

When Scotland qualified for the Men's World Cup for the first time in 28 years, Scottish supporters erupted in wild celebrations – and even set the ground moving in the process.

According to the British Geological Survey (BGS), when Kenny McLean scored from the halfway line to seal a stunning 4-2 win over Denmark, which is ranked 18 places higher in the world than Scotland, the reaction at Hampden Park was equivalent to a very small earthquake.

Celebrations of McLean's stunning goal were captured by seismic activity monitors at the Glasgow Geothermal Observatory in Dalmarnock, about two kilometers from Earth, BGS said.

The reading taken between 21:48 and 21:50 – when McLean's audacious shot hit the net, which was shortly followed by the final whistle – was measured as an increase between -1 and zero on the Richter scale and produced the equivalent of 200 kilowatts, enough to power between 25 and 40 car batteries.

Kieran Tierney's stoppage-time goal, which gave Scotland a 3-2 lead, also made for good reading, although not as strong as McLean's goal.

A BGS spokesperson said: “Up to 300 naturally occurring earthquakes are detected in the UK each year, but only around 30 of these are of sufficient magnitude to be felt by people,” adding that induced seismic events, such as those caused by human activity such as sonic booms, are also recorded. Most earthquakes in the UK are very small and do not cause any damage.

A magnitude 3.3 earthquake could be felt in homes across Perthshire last month.

Stadium events have rattled seismometers in Scotland before, but never more so than at Oasis. The band's 2009 Murrayfield concert produced the strongest tremors in two decades of observation, besting even Taylor Swift's concerts in Edinburgh last year and Harry Styles' concert in 2023.
