Residents recount waking up to rare Texas Panhandle earthquake – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Two Pampas residents share what it was like to wake up to the strongest earthquake ever recorded in the Texas Panhandle.

The quake occurred around 5:21 a.m. Thursday, according to the US Geological Survey. The US Geological Survey measured the earthquake’s magnitude at five magnitude and said it was the strongest earthquake ever recorded in the Texas Panhandle.

Pampa resident Katherine Norderbos said she woke up to a loud noise and her bed shook before she realized what was happening.

I was asleep. “I was woken up by a loud noise and shaking. My husband immediately woke up and said, ‘I think we’re having an earthquake,'” Norderbos said. Then he asked me how to spell seismic.”

Another Pampa resident, Stephanie Cruz, was working out in her garage with her friend when she noticed mirrors shaking and objects moving on top of the refrigerator.

“I wrote on Facebook: ‘Was that an earthquake?’ In one minute I had 20 comments. Everyone was saying: ‘Yes, yes, yes,’” Cruz said.

Residents across the Texas Panhandle and in southern New Mexico and Oklahoma reported feeling the quake.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage, according to the Dallas Morning News, but residents described their feelings of shock and anxiety after the sudden earthquake.

“It took a few hours for me to calm down. I was so anxious,” Cruz said.

According to Texas Tribune reports, Texas has experienced only seven earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or greater in recorded history, with two of the largest occurring in West Texas.

It is currently unclear what caused the earthquake in the Texas Panhandle.

Norderbos, who has lived in the Panhandle for nearly 20 years, said this was the first earthquake she had ever experienced.

“I became a grandmother eight days ago, and now I can tell little Sophie that eight days after you were born we had an earthquake and you slept through it,” Norderbos said.
